Do you love to sing? Are you looking for a choir?
If you love to sing, have an ear for music and a secret wish to perform, we’d love to hear from you! Even if you’ve never tried this sort of singing before, why not contact us and come along for a visit. We rehearse on Thursday evenings in St Catherine’s Village Hall, Guildford, GU2 4HF, except for the first week of the month when we rehearse on a Tuesday instead – see our events calendar on the right.
We’re sure you’ll find our rehearsal evenings an inspiring combination of hard work, great sounds and serious fun!
An ability to read music and choral experience would be an advantage but are not essential. We welcome those with good motivation, commitment, and a willingness to learn – and a good sense of humour is always an asset. To sing with us you need to be able to hold a note and sing in harmony. We aim for high standards but there’s plenty of support available and we have a comprehensive on-going training programme, as well as access to a variety of external courses.
What some of our members say:
- Discovering the chorus has opened up a completely new world for me — I’ve made some great friends, discovered a new passion, been stretched, inspired and moved!
- It’s great to come along and put your worries aside for a few hours.
- There are so many wonderful things about being a member of Guildford Harmony — fellowship, great music and aiming for top quality singing performance are all deeply rewarding.
- Being in Guildford Harmony is a lot like being on a sports team, but with sequins instead of sweat!
A typical rehearsal starts at 7.45pm with 15 minutes or so warming up. This is usually good fun and helps to relax the body, prepare the voice, focus the mind, and develop the ear. The next hour is spent working on current songs as well as some older pieces to familiarise newer members with our repertoire and refresh memories. We progress through the chosen material, sometimes in our sections. We may work on performance skills e.g. arranging the ‘stack’ for a performance. We have fun singing in quartets which help to improve our delivery and confidence. At 9.30 pm there are notices and a chance to chat over a hot drink. Section leaders usually arrange an additional practice once a month.
We look forward to hearing from you!
